Adam Mason

Adam’s journey has been a slowly tightening downward spiral, marked by steps of increasing moral concession and psychological degradation.

Before the Crossing, Adam was a psychology student, and his academic experience combined with further individual study found much practical use during the harrowing years that followed.  However, the death of his close friend Mary at the hands of an ally left an indelible mark upon his psyche, one which festered and grew until Adam eventually all but abandoned his role as a diplomatic and local counselor.

The experience of the Crossing severed him emotionally from his friends, family, and home.  He began to accept lengthy and often dangerous missions as a traveling diplomat and scout, working closely with his longtime friend, Michael.  Originally resisting the convenience of violence as anything but a last resort, and even studying as a field medic, the brutality and horror of New America forged the aching, lonely, idealistic young explorer into a cold, calculating, and uncompromisingly effective killer.

Nick Smarto

Nick was warm and caring, a bright student and a trusted friend, but that was the last world, this is the next.

The Crossing had left Nick in a world of no warmth and comfort, and Nick’s inner pragmatist slowly began to replace his yearning for the past. Losing most of his friends and family to the Crossing, Nick has developed both a severe attachment to those still left with him, but an even more severe fear of bonding with anybody else. Nick cannot seem to find it in himself to trust the world again, and fights a quiet, constant battle with himself between forming new relationships and protecting himself by being an outsider.

Decades have passed and Nick has learned to leave his emotions in the rubble and concentrate on developing technologies and relationships that will foster the slow, agonizing rebirth of the human race. Nick serves as the Roadhouse’s Secretary of Faction Affairs – the chief diplomat for the territory, and also supervises the Post-Apocalyptic Core of Engineers (PACE). He occupies himself, often in solitude, through the pursuit of  engineering projects, studying, and the occasional cigar, but can never seem what he needs the most, someone to rely on.
